Chapter 16

Lyssa did not need to open her eyes to know that she was alone in the bed. Hunter probably had to get up early today. But still, it would have been nice to wake up next to him. She moved her hands to where he had slept and was confused when her hands touched the icy cold sheets. When she opened her eyes, she saw that the candles had long simmered out. Hunter had been gone for quite some time. The lack of his face in the morning light made a pang of sadness enter her mind. Was he a morning person? Or was he a grump like her?

Lyssa looked around the floor for her things and found them easily. She dressed quickly and went to the mirror on the wall. Did she look changed? Should she? If anything, Lyssa felt different, a little more confident in her skin. Was this what a well-loved woman felt like? Lyssa would not let anything ruin this delicious feeling of contentment. She closed her eyes and pictured her room, and off she went.

It was clear that Hunter had stopped by her room, as there was a single red rose lying on the pillow of her bed. It was his way of apologizing for not being there in the morning. He had known she would come here next. She picked up the rose from the pillow and put it to her nose.

“Well, time for me to face the day.” She showered and dressed for her morning before going down for breakfast with Jackson. As she sat down at the table, she made sure to put her thoughts on lock down. He did not need to read about what happened last night. That was private.

“Good morning,” she greeted him, and was surprised to find Serena seated next to him.

“Happy belated birthday, Lyssa. I’m sorry that I missed it.”

“Thank you, Serena. It was one of the best.” Lyssa hoped that the smile she gave them did not betray her. She wished she could talk to Hunter today, but she knew he had gone back to his secret identity this morning and there was no guarantee when she would see him again. Lyssa hoped she would be too busy this week to miss his absence.

This week, Sector 4 was exploring more of the areas that Lyssa had catalogued and trying to cast out as many earth bound shadows as they could. They may not be able to annihilate many while they were in the Land of the Shadows, but they sure as hell would take out any they saw in their own world. Soon, they would start planning their attacks with other sectors, but until Julius felt that Sector 4 was more cohesive, he wanted them to stick together.

Since it was spring break, she spent that day tracking down more locations where the shadows had started gathering, then she marked it in the notes for the Watch Tower. Today, she was just finding them and passing on the locations.
